Summer To Winter
The sun crackled in the cobalt sky and
the sprinkler lines shot rainbow arcs
onto withering alfalfa.
Butterfly wings fluttered above
pigs sprawled in the cool mud.
Dust Kicked up behind
the old blue pick-up truck.
Summer’s heat wave hovered
just above the ground before
snowdrifts curled across the road.
Man and beast hibernated in front of
the crackling fireplace watching the
birch logs snap and pop.
Winter’s deep-freeze numbed even the soul and
icicle stars clung to the black velvet, midnight sky.
